Yeah, and it was relatively cheap. SGD 350 which, at current exchange rates makes it about $240 US.

Wow, 1920x1080 makes me drool. I prefer widescreen real estate (horizontal) to vertical.

I have the same gripe with my laptops, i.e. I want higher resolution, but I think that's a video card constraint. So there's nothing you can do.

I got a new 23" monitor (Samsung 2333SW) for home that provides 1920x1080 resolution. My wife's old home laptop handles it fine. My work laptop maxes at 1400x1050. :( Trying to figure out if there is a way to make the work laptop go higher res.

As for home conference calls, I have a (Radio Shack/ Uniden) cordless phone which I plug a wired, one-sided headset (Panasonic from Best Buy) into and then drop the phone in my pocket (shorts with big pockets). I can walk all over the apartment and listen to / talk on the concalls. This has worked well for me for the past 7 years.

Bluetooth headset has never worked very well for me. Better than speaker for listening, but talking was always problematic.

Although that's frequently the case when I talk anyway, regardless.

I use a wireless headset both at work and at home, that way when I'm ignoring the pointless drivel that many concalls devolve into I can just mute my phone and do something productive.

I'll take Al Gore's 3 cinema displays any day, but at about a grand a piece, that's too rich for my blood.

Sorry to hear about your job. Hang in there; I think you'll be back at it sooner than you think.

I used to have Vonage line, but when we moved to Portland, it stopped working dependably. So, I dumped it, and I use the landline for free calls and my cell for long distance.

We have software VoIP, but I think it's too choppy. I've never found a good headset. I get along fine with the speaker phone and the handset.

I was already shopping for an additional monitor for home as I hope to be doing a lot more work from home soon. The ball instead of a chair idea is a good one too--I'll definitely give that a try. My mom is a physical therapist and will be proud that I listened to her (she's always worried about my long hours in a desk chair).

Speaking of concalls, I assume you have many calls for meetings and the like. What sort of phone setup do you use? Headset or a good quality speaker phone?

Although it's very common here in Portland to work in the numerous coffeehouses with free wi-fi, I'm not a huge fan. I do it occasionally, but only if I'm already on the road.

My home office is my Batcave. I can't concentrate with ambient noise around me, and conference calls are impossible. That said, lots of people love the nomadic office because of its variety and social interaction.

How right you are. I neglected to mention my ergo-keyboard, which is indispensable. I use it so much that I actually cramp up when I type for too long on a standard keyboard.

If you feel like sharing your workspace, here's the Flickr group.

Jake:

Great post! I'm hoping to become a "remote" worker next year and I totally appreciate the tips you've shared. I'm already a fan of the multiple monitor configuration and will definitely invest in this option when I setup my home office. Curious if you have a regular place you go on those days you're feeling a little claustrophobic – a place with free Wi-Fi perhaps? =)

Cheers,

Ken

How your desk, computer, chair, and keyboard are set up makes a world of difference in productivity and health consequences. Avoid carpal tunnel, people!

I'm not in this group, but check out some cool (and some not) workspaces at http://wherewedowhatwedo.com and resolve to make some adjustments where your work for 2009.
