Google IO Sells out Like a Concert

So tickets for Google IO (@googleio), Google’s annual developer conference went on sale today and sold out in 59 minutes according to Vic Gundotra (@vicgundotra), Google’s VP of Engineering.

Sure, the payment system was reportedly janky, and many of us had early access to tickets. So, it’s not clear how many tickets were actually sold in 59 minutes today.

I’ve heard several people voice the opinion that the freebies have ruined the conference.

The freebie I’m hoping for at Google I/O 2011: Nothing – justinsb’s posterous

For attending Google IO last year, I received a Droid, an EVO, and a Google TV, the Logitech Revue. That’s some pretty serious swag.

Although I get why Google gives away devices, like many, I wonder if they’re attracting people more interested in having free stuff than in building on the various Google platforms.

I think we’re seeing this theory proven by the quick sell out this year.

Are you going to Google IO? If so, why?
