A Cognitive Teardown of the Angry Birds UX

This is a fascinating read if you’ve played the game and care about why you continue to pour hours into mastering it.

It’s probably equally fascinating if you haven’t or don’t understand the appeal.

I wouldn’t know, being dangerously addicted myself.

Why Angry Birds is so successful and popular: a cognitive teardown of the user experience (h/t Amy Jo Kim)

Have you tried to get three stars on each level? That way lies madness. You do build a sense of wonder at how complex the physics modeling engine is as you fail miserably to get that odd bounce or tumble.

Also, if you’ve played, you’ll enjoy the Oatmeal’s (@oatmeal) breakdown of each bird and its likeability.

  1. Good chance you saw that in my tweet stream 🙂 Three stars is so tough on some levels. I wonder how many failed attempts these walkthrough types had. Thousands?

  2. I think I have done it 3 times now (factory reset…), completed the entire game.

What I would love to see are my usage statistics. How many times I played each level, how many times I restarted after the first thrown bird, etc. That would be fun, or depressing…

  3. Wow, that’s dedication. I agree that game play metrics would be interesting and depressing. I hear there will be a St. Patrick’s Day update to Seasons . . .

  4. Working on that one already. It’s amazing how much game play you can get of this game. I’ve probably poured a couple days into it, and I’m still working on 3-starring each level. Only just finished Seasons Greedings.
