Thinking about the question, “What games do/did you play?” I’m reminded of how I fill the quiet moments and of how few there are anymore, partly because I’m an adult with a full life, but also because I fill many of them with my smartphone now.
I actually play a variation of the how-close-can-you-get-a-ball-to-the-ceiling-without-touching game. I try to see if I can avoid flinching if a throw comes back at my face. I’m a sick man.

At one of the last Oracle OpenWorlds that I attended, the Oracle Technology Network was distributing sets of building blocks (not specifically Lego blocks, but somewhat similar). The marketing message was obvious – you could “stack” them together to create seamlessly integrated things – but the blocks have remained in my cubicle ever since, along with a more recent acquisition – a light-up Googly ball.
For those of us who commute from home to an office, the drive/train ride/whatever offers additional time for games. One of my favorite games involves the radio. At approximately 7:07 am, when the newsreader on KNX (CBS-owned all news station in Los Angeles) begins to announce the Wall Street indexes, that is my signal to switch to KSPN (Disney-owned all sports station in Los Angeles). I still haven’t been able to make the switch in two words yet, but I’m working on it.
1. LC and I play the lava game at all crosswalks.
2. While running I will do one of the following:
2a. Count in threes, 3, 6, 9 up to 63. Why 63? Because that was the max volume on an old cable box.
2b. Count the number of light poles
2c. Try to stay off the cracks
2d. Try to stay within the bricks
2e. Find a sign in the distance and stare at it until I get to it, then repeat until I’m home.
3. Play the throw-the-ball-at-the-ceiling-without-touching-it game still
4. Put my arm/hand out the window and move it up and down with the wind.
Good times. I know I have other games, but I can’t seem to remember any of them. Memory is temporal.
I love the radio game. I sometimes put the radio on scan and try to sing along w every station, which is pretty much impossible.
Since I speak little Spanish and no Cantonese, it would be impossible for me to sing along with every station.
Yup, that’s the biggest challenge for me too. I just play the English language stations 🙂
I used to play the “how high can you make the mpg indicator go,” until one time I put it in neutral going downhill with the cruise control on, and the cruise decided to max the engine rpm’s.

The radio game is more fun with the older-tech radio in my station car. The goal normally is to minimize bad music and avoid ads. The buttons are starting to go bad, adding entropy.
So, your game is to snap pics of the satellite radio’s fails? Traffic must be horrendous for you, or something. I read somewhere that the Prius’ interface is designed specifically to game you into driving better, makes a lot of sense.
