Amy Jo Kim on Applying Game Mechanics to Software

February 2nd, 2011 2 Comments

Thanks to Paul (@ppedrazzi), I’m a big fan of Amy Jo Kim (@amyjokim). If you have an hour and want to learn from the best, check out her Tech Talk at Google on how to apply game mechanics to functional software.

The message hasn’t changed much since I first saw her presentation “Putting the Fun in Functional,” but what she has to say continues to be critical for software development today. And, you can see the indelible mark gaming has made on software design over the last five years or so.

Adding game mechanics to everything is definitely the feature du jour, but done right, they really can make a difference. Even if you’re not building software, understanding game mechanics can be hugely valuable to you. I won’t explain why 🙂
